Welcome to PFLAG!
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 350 affiliates in the United States. This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced and serviced by the PFLAG National Office, located in Washington, D.C., the National Board of Directors and 13 Regional Directors.
Carole Benowitz is the President of our local chapter, as well as the State Coordinator for Florida. Meetings are typically a “round-circle” support group with occasional guest speakers. All are welcome to our meetings where your privacy is respected!
What is PFLAG?
PFLAG is the nation’s largest organization uniting people who are LGBTQ with parents, families, friends and allies. With 200,000 members and supporters, and local affiliates in more than 350 communities across the U.S. and abroad, PFLAG is the largest grass-roots based organization of its kind. PFLAG is a non-profit organization and is not affiliated with any religious or political institutions.
What does PFLAG do?
PFLAG supports people who are LGBTQ, their families, friends, and allies both locally and nationally, providing PFLAG chapter support group meetings and resources. PFLAG also educates families and communities on sexual orientation, gender identity, and LGBTQ issues. Local PFLAG chapters educate their communities through a variety of projects, while PFLAG National continues to provide fair and accurate information on LGBTQ people, their families and friends locally and nationally by providing PFLAG chapter helplines, support group meetings and resources about LGBTQ people, their loved ones, and the unique challenges they face. PFLAG also advocates for equal rights for people who are LGBTQ on local, state, and national levels.
Who are PFLAG members?
Our members come from all walks of life. We are straight, we are gay, we are bi, trans, queer, non-conforming, non-binary, and gender fluid . We are parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, friends, children and allies. We come from large cities and small towns. We live in rural areas. We are people of color. We come from all economic backgrounds. We come from all faith traditions. We are disabled. We are youth and we are elderly. We are progressive and conservative and everything in between. Our members and our leadership are diverse, but what we have in common is our commitment to grow beyond false and harmful perceptions of LGBTQ people, to educate our communities, and to stand up for full equal rights and societal affirmation for LGBTQ people. This includes speaking out against the harmful practice of “conversion therapy”, which not only is ineffective, but has been shown to increase the suicide rate of LGBTQ people.
